My initial guess was that this was some sort of ghost of an early "cyberspace", or something along those lines, something that damaged the wetware. Alternatively, I considered drug abuse, with the cake / iced sugar as metaphor. An interesting take, this, with some great imagery. I'm particularly fond of "the sodium orange of 3am" - very striking. I wasn’t sure what “It” was either.
